Announcing the General Availability of Route-Maps for Azure Virtual WAN

Exciting news for Azure users: the general availability of Route-Maps for Azure Virtual WAN has been announced! This new feature offers enhanced control over route advertisements and routing in Virtual WAN virtual hubs. Route-Maps provide users with the ability to manage the routing that enters and exits Azure Virtual WAN site-to-site (S2S) VPN connections, User VPN point-to-site (P2S) connections, ExpressRoute connections, and virtual network (VNet) connections. This greater level of control allows for route summarization, and the ability to influence routing decisions through BGP attribute adjustments such as modifying the AS-PATH and utilizing BGP community tags.

Route-Maps consist of a sequence of rules applied to received or sent routes by the virtual hub. Each rule includes match conditions, actions to be performed, and the option to apply these to a connection. Users can drop or modify routes, prepend AS-PATHs, and manage community attributes. This feature is particularly useful for simplifying route management among on-premises and virtual networks and can be easily found in the routing section of your Virtual WAN hub. Troubleshooting is simplified via the Route-Map Dashboard, which displays routes before and after a Route-Map is applied. With these capabilities, users can exert fine-grained control over their network traffic, ensuring it aligns perfectly with their organizational needs.

Hi, I’m Oskar!

Cloud architect by day, tech tinkerer by night, and a proud father all the time. Born in 1990 in Poland and now based in Germany, I spend my days diving deep into cloud, Azure, and all things technology. But my passions go beyond the digital world – I love DIY projects, home automation, biking, gardening, and cooking (because good food fuels great ideas).

This little blog is where I share my insights, experiments, and thoughts on cloud tech – because let’s be honest, the internet can always use one more tech enthusiast’s perspective.
